Cypripedium acaule, or pink lady's slipper, is native to the eastern and midwestern United States. This is one of the most difficult wildflowers to grow. It requires a very low pH (very acidic) soil to grow and also debatably requires a fungal relationship with its roots to grow as well; it grows in acidic substrates in pine and oak forests, bogs and swamps in either dry or moist soil, as long as the pH is well-suited.

In our yard, this grows in the Conifer Area.

Our growing score: 9
