Empetrum nigrum, or black crowberry, is native to the top tier of states of the northeastern corner of the US, from Minnesota to Maine as well as California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska. It grows in rocky outcrops and barren bog edges in sandy, poor, acidic soil.
